Tom, discuss Timmy's condition with your vet. We learned that both the
thyroid
and adrenal glands are controlled by the pituitary, and, what started as
hypothyroid turned out to be Cushings.
Ivan, at about 40 lbs, takes 500mgs 5 times a week. This appears to do
a good
job, and he is not "flattened".
I'm sorry to hear about both Timmy and Rosti, I hope they can find some
relief.
Our prayers to Clea.

Wendy, so nice to hear about you and Flyssa after a while. I'm glad she's
still with us, if not at her best.
Several friends have tried Anipryl for dogs with cognitive dysfunction.
They
all felt it helped, and did improve bladder control. But whether this was
a
pu/du issue or one of keeping the mind in gear is an open question.
Ivan's vet feels he has done well on Lysodren, and there is no reason
to switch
to an even more expensive drug that may not do the trick, or may even make
him
worse. He seems to have his kidney's under control, although it usually
means
one of us needs to get home "on time" to take him outside.

In celebration of Heaven's, and Ivan's upcoming birthday, I've finally
put
up the beginnings of the "gallery" on the Cushing's web page
<http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~lolawson/cushings/>. Check out both of
their
adorable little faces (and Missy's there, too)!
Anyone else who wants to add their brave little trooper's face to the
page
is welcome to send me electronic images (preferably .jpeg files), photos
(which I promise to return!) or color photocopies. I'll also more than
gladly accept stories, journal entries, poems, information, questions for
the FAQs (frequently asked questions), or whatever else you think might
be
appropriate for the pages.
Finally, as I gather them, I'll also be adding to the links page sources
of
pet loss support and information.
Hugs to you and your babies,
-Leslie

Hello Everyone, it is so nice to know that there are people out there
with
babies with the same problem as our baby. We are Randy and Jackie with a
Manchester Chihuahua, Sunny - 11 years old, diagnosed 6 months ago with
Cushings, I have found out more in the last couple of weeks than I have
in
the last 6 months, we seemed to be getting nowhere fast with our vet so
I
did alot of leg work over the internet and found a wonderful vet at Auburn
University who knows so much about the disease, her name is Dr. Chisam,
I
had a wonderful conversation with her on Friday last and learnt more about
Sunnys disease and now hopefully we can help her. Sunny is only on 3/4
Lysodren once a week and all her symptoms have not changed, she has gone
from a 14lb baby to a 20lb baby, not good, Thank you so much all of you,
I
have read all your stories today and feel so much better and not alone,
I
told Sunny all of this when I went home to her lunch time, I know she
understands, God Bless all of you and love your babies for me. Jackie

Dear Dillon,
Thanks for tip concerning Timmy's thyroid problem. He goes to
the Vet tomorrow ("piggy-backed" with Little Rosti) to have it
thoroughly checked out.
"Ivan" is such a great name for a Corgi! Maria used to have
Corgi-mix (with, we think, the heart of a German Shepherd). His name
was "Baby Moose" and he lived to be 17. People were always so
surprised to see his actual size after having heard such a powerful
bark from behind a closed door. Corgis really are "big dogs in small
suits"!

Pictures of precious Floyd (click on his picture to compare his appearance
before and after treatment!), lovely Clea, and irresistable Bo have been
added to the gallery page of the Cushing's web site
<http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~lolawson/cushings/>. Thanks to Bev, Tom
and
Maria, and Judy for contributing their darlings faces to the gallery.
Also, we have a number of new subscribers, bringing the total to 21!!
If
you've recently joined the list and haven't yet introduced yourself, please
do!

After Ivan was first diagnosed with Cushings, I decided to learn all
I could
about this ailment. I went to the library, I went on-line. I first "met"
Wendy on r.p.d.health a few years back. I've spoken with several notable
endocrinologists (I accidentally attended a conference that was held in
the
same hotel as a conference I was at this spring, and found myself more
knowledgeable than some of the "experts" :-).
But most of all, I resolved myself to make Ivan comfortable.
Anyways, he'll be 14 on Sunday. A salute to every caring vet, and the
loving
owners.

We have discovered an absolutely wonderful set of books and wish
we had known about it at least 4 dogs ago.
*Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine* (4th ed.)(S.J.
Ettinger & E.C. Feldman, eds.)(Publisher: W.B. Saunders, Phila., Pa.
1995)
This is a 2-volume set (weighs a ton) and is very expensive:
$194. If you special order it through Barnes & Noble, it costs $175.
It usually takes a couple of weeks to receive, but if you want it
within 1-2 days, you can pay a special mailing fee of $23.
The volumes contain invaluable information about *everything*
concerning cats and dogs, written by specialists all over the country
and beyond. Technical . . . . yes. But, after a great deal of study
and underlining or highlighting (and with the help of good old
Webster's Dictionary), we were delightfully surprised that we were
actually starting to understand the stuff. There are special chapters
relating to everything and anything that has to do with Cushings
Disease throughout the two volumes. Cushings is an insidious disease.
We're happy with this discovery and have budgeted the cost as
anniversary presents to each other.
Very special Happy Birthday hugs and licks to Heaven and Ivan
from Little Rosti, Clea & Timmy. Hugs and kisses to them from us, too
May all your pets stay warm and stay well. Tom and Maria.
