Anipryl has recieved some good reviews, but I don't know which form of
Cushings
is works best on. Anipryl is also proving effective in treating cognititve
dysfunction, so this might be an additional benefit in an older dog.
Good luck to all.

We are dealing with "orphan drugs". Low (relatively) demand
means high price.
Our vet says that, per capita, Cushings is six times more prevalent in
dogs
than in humans.

My vet told me it would be about $70 a month for my 60lb. dog.

Anipryl is used in pituitary dependent Cushings. I noticed that several
folks in the group are being put off by the cost of Anipryl. It is really
only slightly more expensive than Lysodren because you don't need as much
of it.
Best to all. Dorothy

There has been some discussion about the cost of anipryl. When we
used anipryl (for about six weeks) in May-July of this year, we were
unable to find it as a veterinary prescription. It had then just
been approved for use in the treatment of Cushings and we were told
that the veterinary version of the drug had not then been
manufactured. Instead we filled prescriptions for Eldepryl, the
human version of it (prescribed for Parkinson's disease), at the
local pharmacy. The drug companies whomped us. $155 per
prescription (60 capsules). We were initially giving two capsules
per day, but two pills a day was clearly not enough. At the end of
the period, with only marginal improvement in the Cushings, we were
trying four a day. In theory, you can break the capsules and
sprinkle the medication on food. With Clea that didn't work, as she
would not eat the medicated food. She is very resistant to pills
(imagine a 20 lb. sumo wrestler, and you have the picture), so the
administration rate was inefficient. If the medication had worked,
the cost would not have mattered. After all, she is now more than 16
years old. There was some improvement, but then her kidneys
deteriorated and her appetite vanished.
It's been a long story. In our experience, given how lysodren
(also an expensive drug) is administered, the cost of anipryl would
have been 4-8 times more than that of lysodren. We now have another
dog with Cushings signs (not conclusive, and dex suppression test was
negative--he suppressed like a normal dog), so we are interested in
learning how to obtain medications at reasonable costs. It sounds
like it varies all over the place. Are we right in drawing that
conclusion? Tom and Maria White

Hello everyone, just a quick note to let you know that Sunny's best friend
Sadie went to doggie heaven last monday. She had been very ill for a couple
of weeks with fluid around the heart and in the lungs and after an agonizing
weekend last week we decided to not let her suffer any more. Our vet was
wonderful, but we are still in mourning for her and so is Sunny, Sadie was
13 maybe older, we do not know for sure, but we loved her dearly and had
her
cremated and she now is with us at home. We hope and pray that this next
blood test for Sunny will help us be able to get her more regulated with
her
Lysodren, she is creeping up on the scales bless her. Love to all the babies
out there, we love all of them. Jackie and Randy.

My vet was able to order Anipryl from one of her usual supply houses.
If
you are interested, I can find out which one and the current cost.
