Has anyone's dog suffered a loss of balance while being on Anipryl? My dog,
Abby, has been suffering from a vestibular problem (walking like a drunk with
a head tilt) since just before Christmas. I notice that dizziness is one of
the first sideaffects listed for Anipryl's human equivalent Eldipryl. Last
summer, we took Abby off of Lysodren because of similar problems when one of
the endocrinologists at the AMC in NYC admitted that he had seen dizziness as
a sideaffect of Lysodren. Thanks.

There is only one supplier. In early 1995, they stopped production for about 2
months. We were fortunate enough to locate a supply of it, but I don't know
what we'd have done if our pharmacist hadn't "gone the extra mile".

I paid $68.90 for 30 last Friday.

Hi... I'm fairly new to the list and have basically been lurking for awhile.
I've been attempting to learn about Homeopathic remedies, too, but not fast
enough for my Cushings dog, so I consulted with a Homeopathic Vet on Friday.
She put him on a few nutritional supplements to begin with and here we go.
Hope it at least keeps him comfortable. This is in addition to my changing
his diet to BARF, which helped alot.

We ask that you pray hard for Sunny this week, we are in another loading
stage, it has been almost a year since our baby was diagnosed and when we
went thru a loading stage then, she was very sick and had to go back onto
prednisone, let's hope that does not happen this time, otherwise there has
been no change in her condition, she will be on 3/4 pill a day for 6 days
then we will do the blood thing again, Randy and I would like to thank all
of you for being there for us, love your babies for us. Jackie and Randy.

Hi! Is it still okay if I post to this list? I have been receiving it, but
since I unintentionally seemed to hurt someone by comments I made I have
been afraid to post. The *last* thing I want to do is make any of this
harder for anybody! Lemme know ... thanks!

First of all, a big warm welcome to all of our most recent subscribers.
Remember, be sure to introduce yourselves. We currently have a total of 53
members!

Secondly, this is yet another call for additions to the currently very lame
Cushing's Web Page. Pictures, stories, Cushing's-related articles from
journals, questions, etc. are all encouraged and appreciated.

Thirdly, I recently received a note from a woman who was interested in
Cushing's in horses. If any of you run across information on equine
Cushing's do share it with me!

And finally, just an FYI to everyone (in response to Kathleen's recent post):
If, as the group's moderator (my husband likes to refer to me as the Chief
Executive Princess...), I decide that a person's postings to the forum are
intentially hurtful, sound like sales pitches, or are otherwise
inappropriate, I'll be sure to warn the offender first, then remove
him/her. But, as I mentioned in the introduction to the list that you
received when you subscribed, you'd have to *really* upset me to be
ostracized. ;-)

So far, that's not been the case for anyone. I hope everyone continues to
see the Cushing's Forum as being one big happy, helping family!

yet another glitch.... Jake appears to be doing well on his lysodryn but
there is still something puzzling me. before he was diagnosed [ but
looking back he was well into the disease] Jake developed white spots on
his muzzle, legs, and face. I assumed they were related to the cushings as
they started about the time as his hair loss. Now hi hair is coming back
in, in fact he has regrown all his hair and shed most of the old coat he
had... he missed 2 complete shed cycles before cushings treatment was
started. But allot of the new hair still has some white in it... He
appears to be doing great otherwise except for very dry skin. Is this all
part of lysodryn therapy , cushings, or is something else going on.???
PS his water intake seams to cycle with his drug dosage... in other words
it is low the day after Lysodryn given and rises steadily until next
dosage. Low is 54oz rises to 80oz in 4 days.

thanks all!

Dear Leslie,
Thank you (and the group) for all the wonderful information about Cushing's.
I had a yorkie named Rocky who was diagnosed in October. He was on Anipryl
for two months when we found out that he had malignant lymphoma. We had him
put to sleep because he was suffering and in much pain. As much as I would
like to continue to read about all the pooches (Terrible Ted, Sunny, et.al),
it just reminds me of my Rocky too much. Could you please remove my name from
the list of receipients? Thanks a lot, and I wish all a happy and healthy new
year.
Thanks,
Betsy Hoffman

We've always attributed Ivan's graying to age, as his beloved sister (RIP) also
developed a gray muzzle at about the same time.

As far as the water cycling, talk to your vet. You might want to consider
giving him smaller does over more days (ie instead of giving him half of his
dose twice a week, give him a quarter four times, etc). But talk to your vet,
first. Also, the lysodren does take some time to "kick in", even though you
think you are seeing results.

When I read these posts, I see sadness, hope, success, and most of all, deep
love for our four-footed friends.

I've learned alot, but it is time for me to move on. Believe it or not, two
trusted vets have reached the conclusion that my little Ninja was incorrectly
diagnosed with Cushings. I have tried unsuccessfully to remove myself from
the list. Please remove me from your postings. Thanks for all of the great
info, and good luck to all of our brave and funny four-footed friends, and may
all of their two-footed friends enjoy the love from their dogs.

Take care.

Scott....

Hi...my Schonus also experienced quite a bit of hair thinning and one
thing I noticed was it looked like he had a REAL bad case of dandruff.
I asked the Vet and he said it was all part of Cushing's. I find that
taking a fine tooth comb and combing helps somewhat. I use to rub his
body and it looked like it was snowing because there was so much
dandruff flying!!

How long was it before you noticed new hair growth? Schonus has been on
Lysodren now for about a month and I'm just starting to see a "5 o'clock
shadow" on his belly where it was shaved for the two ultrasounds.

Five to six weeks is what we experienced with Ivan. Really dramatic hair
growth after about two months.

You might as your vet about Nu-Sal-T (I think that's it), a "dandruff" shampoo
for dogs. It really helped Ivan, and even works through some of his minor
staph infections.

I first saw fuzz about 3 weeks after the loading phase. in the last 2 weeks
he has reached what I would call normal hair volume although he also
started the SEVERE shedding of the old dead hair he has had for over a year
and the dandruff in the same last 2 weeks. interestingly in the last year
his coat turned from deep chocolate to a light rust [dead hair] thanks to
the shedding he is again 90% chocolate, except for the white spots and
dandruff.

The dandruff does worry me as a possible sign the lysodryn is not working
or has side affects. Of course it could be related to the fact he is doing
a fall shedding in the middle of a Midwestern winter, and he's inside all
day. heck my skin is dry now to.

Scott,
Bo had the same symptoms after the Lysodren got the Cushings under
control. Previously, he had not even regrown the hair where his belly
was shaved serveral months before for an ultrasound. As soon as he
successfully finished his Lysodren loading phase, he went through a
period of terrible dandruff and extreme shedding. I gave him a medicated
bath every week for three weeks. By then, all the old dead hair was gone
and a much healthier coat had grown in. His coat is still fine, and
there's been no recurrence of the dandruff. This happened last
spring/early summer. By the way, he had also begun taking thyroid
medicine along with the Lysodren. The doc determined that he was
hypothyroid in addition to having Cushings. So actually, I'm not sure
what helped his coat, but I can't help but think that the remission of
the Cushings symptoms had a great impact.
Judy

Interesting question. The same is true of Willie. But he started treatment
at age 8, and is now 11. I assumed it was just aging. now I'm curious.

Can someone please explain something to me! Schonus is on his second
week of his maintenance dose. He is taking 2,000 mgs a week as he
weighs 92 lbs. Today we had to take him to the Vet and he was given a
shot of Prednisone. Apparently his steroid level dropped too low.

I asked my Vet if we shouldn't lower his maintenance dose and he said no
but to give Schonus his maintenance dose twice a week instead of all at
once. I was also given Prednisone to keep at home in case this happens
again. I would think that his Maintenance Dose would have been lowered
also if his levels dropped???

Anyone experience anything like this?
