When we first loaded Sunny she had to be given Prednisone as her steroid
level
dropped dangerously low. So we have Preds at home as well and we still
kept her
on her maintenance dose (note: it was changed regularly always going up).
I
think the first loading scared the vet, so the maintenance dosing was started
out really low. We have just finished the second loading and this morning
Sunny
will be having the ACTH test. Fingers crossed.
We have noticed that Sunny seems to be breathing in shorter breaths during
her
sleep. Sometimes she stops breathing and we have to rouse her from her
sleep to
start her back again. Fortunately she lays between us with her head between
our
pillows, so listening to her is easier. Has anyone else experienced this?

Can someone please explain something to me! Schonus is on his second
week of his maintenance dose. He is taking 2,000 mgs a week as he
weighs 92 lbs. Today we had to take him to the Vet and he was given a
shot of Prednisone. Apparently his steroid level dropped too low.
I asked my Vet if we shouldn't lower his maintenance dose and he said no
but to give Schonus his maintenance dose twice a week instead of all at
once. I was also given Prednisone to keep at home in case this happens
again. I would think that his Maintenance Dose would have been lowered
also if his levels dropped???
Anyone experience anything like this?

I tend to agree with your vet. In fact, you might talk to him/her about
going
to four times a week. Spreading it out lessens the impact on his system.
Just my opinion, and a little experience.

Has anyone noticed "freckle like" spots on the abdomen area?
Schonus
had two ultrasounds done and I just noticed some dark brown "freckle
like" spots on one side of his abdomen. He is 6 years old...are these
age spots?

Bonnie, our almost 3yo Corgi, has some liver colored spots on her tummy.
I think the "freckles" are just a natural pigment variation.
But, I'm not a
vet, and I don't play one on TV :-)

Has anyone had experience with a particular diet being helpful to the
Cushing's dog. The only thing I have read is that the diet should be
high in protein and low in purine. Does anyone know what purine is and
how it is harmful? It seems to me that a diet high in protein would put
additional stress on the liver and kidneys, which cushing's patients do
not need. Also, I have read in some articles on human cushings that a
dietary supplement of potassium is helpful. Is this also true with dogs
and, if so, in what dose?
Our dog has just recently been diagnosed and I would appreciate any
advice on the above or any other areas that anyone has. Thanks in
advance from me and Cybil.

At about age 9 1/2 (before he was diagnosed with Cushings) Ivan and his
sister
Molly (of beloved memory) were put on SD Senior. Pluses or minuses of SD
aside, the recommendation was to a senior diet that was lower in proteins
as
well as sodium, as these put stress on both the liver and the kidneys.
Hmmm, not a bad suggestion for some of us ...

Ever since Sunny was diagnosed, she was put on Hills Science W/D wet
and dry
as she has a mixture for her meal, this was to help her weight and control
her blood sugar as she was borderline diabetes, it seems to have worked
although she is still very close to being diabetic, we have just finished
a
week of loading and had blood drawn yesterday, and full CBC which we expect
back sometime soon, we are hoping it will be totally different than the
last
one, finger crossed. Love all your babies for us. Sunny and Jackie

Ivan's littermate, Peter, went to the Rainbow Bridge Tuesday. He suffered
an
apparent stroke Sunday night and went downhill from there.
He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Oh Dillon, I'm so sorry. Of course there are no words I could say and
nothing I could possible do to take away the hurt of losing a companion
you loved, but if there were, do know I'd say them or do whatever I could.
Instead, I find myself crying for the sadness you must feel.
I'm sure Missy was there at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for Peter and
I
trust that she'll keep him good company.
Have you planned any special remembrance for Peter?
Give Ivan a special hug for me.

Thanks. This is a "hard" mailing list, because we all know

loved ones are living on borrowed time.
