I wish I could tell you if Cookie's in pain. I also wish I knew if Maggie
is. It's something I've been wondering a lot about lately. I don't have
the money to treat her, so I'm just sitting back, watching, hoping she
stays well, and worrying.
Hello Lia, the above is a section from your note to the cushings group,
I
was rather upset about "just sitting back and watching her and not
having
the money to treat her", what will happen to her when she needs loading
doses and visits to the vet, how will you cope, is there not a clinic there
for people who cannot afford the vet fees, do you need help from us as a
group, we cannot let Cookie go without, please let me know what is
happening. Sunny, Saphir, Jackie and Randy.

When Kelso was first thought to have Cushings, I began monitoring
his
water intake. I did this thru the loading and for about 6 weeks after
he began his maintenance phase. My vets loved that I did this since
it really helped in his diagnosis. I have discontinued the monitoring
since he has been doing so well, but still consciously watch how often
I fill the water bowls.
I have the opposite problem of trying to increase Kelso's weight.
He
weighs about 22 pounds now which is just about right but I have to
keep an eye on this.
We are thinking of you and Sunny. Please let us know how she
continues to do!!

The itchies are a sign of the disease. It took Ivan about 6 weeks to
clear up,
but only about 2, after the loading phase, to start showing improvement.
You might talk to your vet about a shampoo like Nu Sal T (I think that's
the
name, I obviously don't have the bottle with me :-). This did wonders
for
Ivan's skin. Basically a cannine formulated dandruf shampoo.

Reading this list, I keep seeing things and thinking - "Should I
have
checked that on Ebony?" "Should I have had the vet try that?"
I keep
wondering if somehow I am responsible for her death. Might she still be
alive if we had tried Lysodren, even with all her other problems? The doubt
is killing me.

I lost my beloved pet and I know the feelings of "what if's",
"if only's", and
"should have's"....it's been nearly two months and I am still
wondering if I did
everything I could do....I wonder if I always will feel that way? I know
that
those of us that love our pets want to do ALL that is possible but sometimes
there just isn't anything more that we can do. And oh how it hurts to lose
them,
I feel for all those that have lost a pet.

You have to realize that you did everything possible for Ebony at
the
time. The main reason for this great list is to share our experiences
to learn for the future, by learning from the past. I hope it helps
you rest easier to know that your experiences will help future babies
cope with this awful disease. Please feel better!!

Hi,
My name is Jacci & my dog Brandy(Beagle/Dachshund mix) was just diagnosed with Cushings. We have one more test phase to go through to determine the route of treatment. This next test will determine if she has an adrenal tumor or her pituitary is not working properly. I'm not sure how far I want to take this. Brandy is 12, she had abdominal surgery 3 weeks ago to rule out liver cancer and explore other possibilities. I was almost ready to let the vet euthanize on the table if she felt things didn't look good. I'm very glad I didn't choose that, because according to the vet her liver looked really bad. But the lab results concluded that is was not cancer. Her symptoms had included shaking, drinking lots of water (although with 2 dogs it's hard to tell just how much she is drinking), no appetite, distended abdomen, and just very listless.
I've been reading some of the old forum notes. Very helpful, but very scary. Some of the treatments seem extreme.
Below are some of the questions I have:
1. Does the disease cause the hair loss or is it the treatment?
2. Is she in any pain at this point?
3. What would happen if we didn't pursue treatment for her?
4. I've read about special diets after beginning treatments. What are the
things that cause special diets?
Thank you for your replies and for this wonderful forum,
Jacci

Maggie (Cookie is the other lady's dog) and I thank you for your concern,
and offers to help...unfortunately, I don't know what anyone can do.
Unfortunately, I'm still in university, and I'm $24,000 in debt :( I
adopted Maggie because her old family didn't want her and she had no place
else to go (they were going to put her to sleep). I didn't know she had
Cushings when I adopted her, and was assured she was healthy. The family
who I got her from has a decent amount of money, but they won't give me
any for her :(
I simply don't have the money to do much for her...I really do have to
sit
back helplessly. Several people have suggested herbal treatments which
I'm going to look into, but the problem with meds like Lysodren and
Anipryl is that once Maggie's on them, she can never go off. Maybe I
could afford them for a little while, but not for the rest of her life (I
still don't have a job lined up for when I graduate).
Unfortunately, there are no cheap clinics around here. I can take her to
the vet when she needs it (she has to get her bum cleaned out every so
often because her anal glands fill up), but daily medication is just too
much.
Stinks, doesn't it? :(

I will question everything we did for both Ivan and Molly for the rest
of my
life. In the end, I think I'll only know that I did what I thought was
right.
I hope that one day they will tell me that was enough.

Lysodren loading is always scary. But, once the dosage is set (although
this
may take some time, please don't fret too much), you may find that you have
a
new dog in the house. Or at least a happier one.
Love to all,

Hi Jacci-
I'll quickly address a couple of your questions based on my own experience
with Cushing's.
>1. Does the disease cause the hair loss or is it the treatment?
Hair loss is a symptom of the disease. Many members of this forum have
reported regrowth of hair after beginning Lysodren treatment. For one
pretty extreme example, look a Floyd in the Cushing's Gallery
<http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~lolawson/cushings>. He turned into a real
teddy
bear, although as I recall, the owner did say his regrowth was a different
texture.
>2. Is she in any pain at this point?
Hmmm... that's a tough one. Cushing's causes muscle, tendon, and ligament
weakness, I believe. For our dog, this meant lameness in her back legs
and
an ligament tear. I think this must have been painful for her!
Also, some folks have said that excessive panting and shaking are pain
responses. Don't you wish these sweet pups could talk to us and tell us
how they're feeling?!?
Best of luck with treating your baby and welcome to the group,
Leslie

Ivan's came back softer than ever. Almost downy soft and smooth. And,
amazingly enough, easy to deal with. He would blow coat just like always,
but
it was a soft, gray/black hair.

Our current vet thinks that some forms of Cushings go hand in hand with
thyroid
conditions (this was certainly Ivan's situation). And the thyroid regulates
body temperature. So I suspect at least some of the panting and seeking
cool
spots is that. But they are such stoic little creatures, and won't tell
us a
thing.

While I have only been subscribing to this list for two weeks, I can
unequivocably say that if we all have one attribute in common (other
than dogs with Cushings), it's that we probably care and fret TOO much
over our dogs.
When I was at the University of Illinois pursuing additional tests
on Sweetie to determine what kind of Cushings she has, the vet, who has
himself a Cushinoid dog, looked at me in a puzzled way and started to say
"Why are you pursuing this?" but then he saw my face, my reaction,
and
he amended it to "Well, I have five dogs..."
How can one say what is enough research and effort when causes and cures
for this disease are, apparently, unknown? What can be more painful than
watching one's loved one die, slowly, day by day, not even sure whether
our pets are in pain or not. Like I said to that vet and I'll put my money
where my mouth is some day, we need research into Cushings Disease!

It does make a difference what type of Cushings our dogs have, though.
Surgery to remove a tumor on an adrenal gland is possible, it that's
found to be the cause--and though it's not an easy surgery, that would
correct the problem, and no further treatment would be needed, unless
the tumor was found to be cancerous. And, if I understand correctly,
Anipryl only works for pituitary-dependent Cushings, (when it works
at all), so knowing which type of Cushings could effect choice
of medication as well. Jeri

Hi Leslie,
Thanks for the reply. This Cushing's disease is very new to me. I'm
=
really glad I found this forum. I'm feeling much more educated, so when
=
I go back to the vet I can ask the right questions.
I don't know how much longer Brandy has, she is 12 now, but I'm going
to =
pursue this and treat it as necessary. I hate to see her in pain. She
=
has brought so much joy to my life.

Sweetie has recently exhibited slight tremors in her legs, yet she prefers
to lie under a window or against an outer door. I wonder if I should have
her thyroid tested. Is there any benefit to this?
She presently takes 10 mg. daily of aprenyl. Is this is a "normal"
dosage
for a 25 lb. dog? I am not sure what OD-symptoms of Aprenyl are, but she
was not shaking prior to being on it. Jeri, the milk thistle seems to
help. I also give 1/3 zantac if she seems to be in pain. Any harm to this?
Is there any categorizing of symptoms as to how far progressed the
Cushings is? I have noticed some dogs have died almost immediately
following diagnosis, while others have survived for years. Will the enzyme
measures indicate how far the disease has progressed? Are there any
measures reliably forecasting the disease's progress?
Thank you. I am so sorry about the recent losses of Echo and Ivan. After
reading the archives, I felt I knew them.

Um, isn't Zantac the same Zantac I take to slow the amount of acid my

Jaci, Ivan was diagnosed just prior to his 11th birthday, and lived to
be
almost 14 1/2. One of the few good things is that you see the vet more
often
and get a little more tuned in on the little one's condition and needs.
It's scary. It's a little painful to everyone. But it can be worked through.
Love to all, hugs and scritches to Brandy, just above the eyes (all of
mine
have been blissed out by this :-)

I really can't answer any of your questions except the first one. If
he/she
hasn't already done so, ask for a full chem panel, including a thyroid series.
And talk to the vet. Find out who is being consulted if he/she is not
an
endocrinology specialist and ask to speak with that person. You deserve
information, and I guess I was lucky to have two vets who were both informed
and willing to talk.
This isn't meant to be a slam on vets, sometimes I think we don't ask
and they
assume we don't want to know.

Yours truly, as well as our gracious founder and hostess are both residents
of
this Garden of Eden (Leslie, do you think I'll get the job with the CofC?
:-)
You'll find Austin to be a fairly dog friendly city.

Shame on you, Dillon, for lying about Austin. This really is a horrible
place to be. [What are you trying to do Dillon, get even *MORE* people
to
move here?!? Geez...... ;-) ]
Naw, I'm just kidding, Austin is an incredible city with many beautiful
parks, a wide variety of restaurants to suit any taste, and every possible
type of live music nearly every night. This is truly Eden, although it
is
quickly becoming overpopulated. Almost daily my native-Austinite husband
wistfully reminisces about the good ol' days when Austin was still just
a
town and you didn't have to fear for your life on the roadways.
Doreen will be warmly welcomed, especially if she comes in August when
the
weather is nice and warm! ;-)

Hi Dillon,

I really can't answer any of your questions except the first one. If
=
he/she
hasn't already done so, ask for a full chem panel, including a thyroid =
series.
And talk to the vet. Find out who is being consulted if he/she is not
=
an
endocrinology specialist and ask to speak with that person. You deserve
information, and I guess I was lucky to have two vets who were both =
informed
and willing to talk.
This isn't meant to be a slam on vets, sometimes I think we don't ask
=
and they
assume we don't want to know.

I took Sweetie to the vet's this morning and received these results.
Can
anyone interpret them for me?
ALKP: 6/97---618
11/97---279 and 355
1/98---748
2/98--1575 (a cause of concern to me)
ALT: 6/97---49

Could stress while at the veterinary clinic and away from home for several
days account for the increases in February figures?
As for the zantac, well, that's something suggested during my first visit
at the U of Illinois Veterinary Clinic when she was diagnosed as having
a
"patchy liver."
Her stomach is very bloated. I started adding cottage cheese and yoghurt
to her diet. Is tofu a good idea, too? Vet is testing her thyroid, hadn't
been done.
Thanks if you can help,

Rudy has been on Anipryl (selegiline hydrochloride by Pfizer) for 6 days
now. We are noticing some improvement in his general demeanor. He may
also have regained a bit of strength.
We found some info on the net at www.lonestarvet.com/cushings.htm which
stated that Anipryl is not currently approved for use in the US. Our vet
said it was the latest thing and had rave reviews of success in Europe.
The info sheet talked about results in 132 dogs. Seems promising.
It is given at 1mg/kg. For Rudy this works out to 1/2 of the 15mg tablets
once a day. Thirty tablets, 2 months worth for us were $80. Expensive
but
if it will give us our wonderful skip back it is certainly worth it.
Does anyone out there have any experience/knowledge with it? How much
does
it cost elsewhere. Any info appreciated.
Thanks, Jody, Peg and Rudy

I am curious about Anipryl, too, as Sweetie has been on it for ten days
now and I do not see great improvement, except that her panting has
decreased and she is drinking less water. I do notice that she has become
more lethargic and has gained three pounds in this time. Also, her
bloating has not diminished and muscular weakness in rear legs remains
constant. I saw her vet today and he is consulting an endocronologist at
Purdue, thanks to Doreen's recommendation. He also took a blood sample for
thyroid analysis.
She takes 10mg. anipryl daily; (current) weight is 29 lbs. though she
should be at 25-27 lbs. How much does Rudy weigh? and for how long a
period of time have you observed Cushings symptoms?

Randy, Jackie, Sunny and Saphir......
I went thru the SAME exact thing with Schonus in regards to scheduling
him for an ultrasound! My Vet told me he could not do it in his office
that I would have to go to Cornell University to get it done. Waiting
list there is 1 1/2 months!!!! I went crazy! At that time Schonus was
not on ANY medications and his post ACTH count was 326!! You bet your
bootie....I got it done the next week. I called my Vet back because I
knew he had the capability of doing the ultrasound and DEMANDED to know
why he would not do it...he finally agreed. No explanations...it was
done within two days! Unfortunately Schonus' abdomen was so distended
the pics came out too gray which made it difficult to make
diagnosis....little did they know I'm an x-ray tech and I asked to see
the pics...and when I saw them...they were definitely gray. The only
way I got an earlier appt at Cornell was my Vet called up for me!
Hey...sometimes somebody has got to pull some strings!! Cornell Univ
had more sophisticated ultrasound unit and we were informed that day of
his appt that if there was an adrenal gland tumor...they were taking him
directly to the OR....I wanted to cry! He was ruled pituitary
dependent.
An endocrinologist is according to my medical dictionary is "an
individual skilled in endocrinology (study of the endocrine system) and
in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the glands of internal
secretion, i.e. the endocrine glands.
I was just curious about something...they are doing sooo many loading
phases on poor little Sunny...how many days did they load her for...7?
When Schonus was "loaded" the first time it was only for four
days...the
second time it took 12 straight loading days! My Vet said we could
"load" up to 14 days...hmmmm?
Hope this helps and our best to you all. Thanks so much for taking the
time for updating us...our thoughts and prayers are with you!
Linda & Schonus

Hi
My poddle was diagnosed with Cushings around Christmas of 1997. We put him
on
Anipryl 5mg. He has been on it for 51 days. The first 30 days we have seen
a
lot of improvement. This month there has not been much of a change. My vet
says Anipryl is approved for the US. It just got approval I think in June.
I
pay about $76 for 5mg. for a 30 day supply. I think that is very expensive.
If
my poddle (Buttons) don't show any more improvement we might have to take
other steps. Good luck with your baby.
Karen

Jenny,
Rudy weighs about 18lbs. We really started noticing him not wanting to
jump up on the bed about 6 weeks ago. More panting and "anxiety"
for 4 or
5 weeks and we noticed some "moist dermatitis" in one of his ears
for a few
weeks. We went in for routine teeth cleaning et c and decided since he
was
7+ years old we would have the routine blood work done. They noticed some
of the liver tests "slightly off" and away we went. Symptoms
plus tests
and here we are. I had not seen any other postings about Anipryl. We'll
let you know.

he "maxed out" on the first loading, even though his symptoms
improved
greatly, they took him off lysodren for two weeks and had me give
prednisone as well. His Cushing's symptoms returned full-force. Then vet
did another loading for shorter period of time. This seemed to have
little effect - not nearly as dramatic a decrease in symptoms as first
time. Finally, using my own judgement, I just went ahead and did a third
loading myself, extending it over longer period but not giving as heavy
a dose. He did not have any reaction and his symtoms, and test results,
showed dramatic improvement. I never really discussed what I did with
the vet, and yes, I know Lysodren can be dangerous, but I had seen how
effective the Lysodren could be and sometimes I just go with my gut
instinct. After all, the vets are not at home with our pets all the
time, and they don't see the little nuances of symptoms, etc.

Hi. I'm new to this group. I have a standard poodle, Spenser. Last April
we
did a routine blood screen for him-he was 7+ years at the time. The results
were borderline that something might be wrong according to the vet. We did
a
repeat screen last October and sure enough, its Cushings. We started him
on
Anipryl by beginning of November. He's 70 lbs and its costing $98/mo (for
30mg/30 day packs).
Very expensive for us. I tried finding less expensive sources but couldn't
and
even went to a "holistic vet" who (I found out after the appointment)
was
charging us by the minute for our appointment.
He was rechecked about 3 weeks later and his bloodwork levels had returned
to
normal. His water consumption isn't high at all for his size. Was feeling
pretty good until I started reading some of these postings and realizing
that
the leg tremors and other symptoms I see in his legs are actually Cushings
related. Apparently the vet has not really made us aware of the full spectrum
of symptoms. He'll have a recheck next week so I'll go back much more
informed. I'm grateful for the opportunity to hear from so many people about
this. Thank you all.

Judy.....
I forgot to mention that during the 12 day loading phase, his dosage
was
dropped but even tho it was 12 days...the end result was great....our
first normal ACTH test in over a year.
Right now I'm fighting a "pad" infection with Schonus. All
of his pads
are raw and bleeding. My Vet did a C&S (culture and sensitivity test)
and found out that we had previously had him on Amoxicillin but that he
is nonresponsive to that. That made me a little mad as we gave him
something for nothing for two weeks. I just have this "thing"
about
putting pills into my dog and them not working. He has now been started
on Oxacillin for 14 days. In addition to the Amoxicillin we were
soaking his feet in Domeboro solution and then applying Bactoderm after
each walk.
Is anyone else experiencing "pad" problems?

The $80 sounds correct (notice I didn't say "right").
As far as availability, I'd guess that the web page is out of date, as
we were
considering this option 6 or 7 months ago, and a number of people on this
list
have been using it.
Glad you're getting good results.

WOW!!! 1 1/2 months??? When Ivan had his spleenectomy, it was like
a Friday
afternoon visit, then bring him in Saturday at 8am for the ultrasound and
surgery on Monday. He would have been dead in 6 weeks!
I hate to sound snotty, but _please_ make sure your vet understands the
urgency
of this. Most vets never see a Cushings case, and may not realize that
days
wasted count two or three to one against life. Little Sunny needs the
ultrasound soon, since the medication isn't working!

Ivan had long term problems with hyperkeratosis of his pads and his nose.
It
would come and go. Thickening, followed by massively sloughing off and
sometimes mild bleeding and apparent soreness. Our vet gave us a product
(named???) that eased the thickening and thus the rest of the problem.
But this, we hypothosized, was more a question of his age than his Cushings.

Re bleeding pads: have you considered Flax Seed Oil--give appx. 1
tablespoon per 50# daily, mix or serve with 1/4-1/2 cup of lowfat cottage
cheese (for the sulfered protien).
The best flax seed oil is found in refrigerated cases at a Whole Foods
or
any good nutritional supplement retailer--must be cold pressed!
good luck, Henry Bliley, Reston, VA

Hello everyone! I have been lurking up until now. This is a great place!
We
have a 9yr old(next month) Bichon Frise who was just diagnosed with Cushing's
(pituitary). He had his first dose of Anipryl today. He is on 10mg/day,
weighs
15lbs, and the cost is 69.70 for 30 tabs. His diagnosis was a result of
blood
work in relation to another chronic problem(bladder stones). His alk phos.
was
elevated so he then had a low dose dex. test which was positive for cushing's.
He has not exhibited any signs nor symptom of the disease except for lately
I
am becoming convinced that his ravenous appetite is indeed a symptom, not
just
his usual pigish self, as it does all of a sudden seem to be getting to
be a
real problem. Hindsight is 20/20. I hope, hope, hope, that the Anipryl
alleviates this. It must be so awful for him to feel so starved all the
time
and his constant teasing is driving me nuts. I feel so guilty eating in
front
of him. Does anyone else have this problem and if so has the treatment
alleviated it?Thanks. It is nice to meet all of you. Debby, Gerry, and
Buddy

Hi! I am new to the list. I have a 7-1/2 year old Miniature Schnauzer
who
was diagnosed with Cushings last summer. She has been on 10mg per day of
Anipryl since July, so it has been a full six months. The changes in her
have been remarkable. The constant drinking of water, lethargy, etc, all
disappeared. I must pay the highest rate so far that I have seen which
is
$104.00 for thirty days, so I suppose I am being taken in by my vet. I
wonder what the drug actually costs and if what we pay is related to where
we live, etc. Recently though we suffered a setback after her rabies shot
- she started with real rapid breathing, not panting, but just fast shallow
breathing. We put her on a bronchodilator and she is doing better and
beginning to return to her old self. I wonder if the rabies shot affected
the medication somehow. I know I am paying a lot of $ for the medication,
but she is well worth it to me to have around for however long she lives
comfortably!

Debby, Gerry, and Buddy-
A ravenous appetite is absolutely a symptom of Cushing's! Mind, you,
not
all Cushinoid dogs show this symptom--often it is masked by other
problems which cause a lack of appetite.
I can't speak from personal experience (as we had a devil of a time
getting our little one to eat anything!), but the literature says that
with successful treatment, a Cushing's induced ravenous appetite will
diminish.
Glad you're on board with us!
Good luck with Buddy's treatment. Be sure to keep us posted.

So glad to hear of your Anipryl success story!
Regarding Ginger's reaction her rabies shot, check out the past
discussions on rec.pets.dogs.health newsgroup. Apparently there's been
a
pretty heated thread about vaccinations in general. I haven't been
following the thread, but I think Dillon has. (Dillon, wanna put your 2

Not really, Molly died ten days after her "comprehensive" vaccinations,
due to
AIHA, Ivan died 3 weeks after his rabies shot. I'm suspicious, but not
bitter.

Welcome Debby, Gerry and Buddy, out baby Sunny still has the ravenous
appetite, this has not changed since she was diagnosed, but now they think
after over 1 year that she could be adrenal dependant and not pituatory,
if
you have been reading about her I will not go on, Good luck with Buddy.

That does sound very high. I pay $95 for thirty 15mg tablets. Maybe you
could gather info on what other list subscribers are paying for 10mgs (I
seem
to recall other people reporting they're paying approximately $65 for a
month's supply of 10mg tablets). Then take that info to the vet. If he's

I just came home from the vet where I picked up our first batch of Anipryl.
Our
dog was just diagnosed this week. They were surprised at the price that
they
were able to get for our 5mg Anipryl- 60 tablets for $60. They indicated
that
they were able to order a generic which they had not known existed until
this
order. The label that they produced doesn't list a generic name though,
it just
says Anipryl. Has anybody else heard of an available generic? If anybody
is
interested I can call the vet and inquire as to where they ordered from
and the
generic name.

Thanks for your posting. My poodle is taking 5 mg. for around $76 for

supply. I tried to get the human form of the drug but my vet said it would

I had asked my Vet about Bag Balm and he said under no circumstances

because Schonus being on Lysodren and bag balm contains some type of

Maybe the vets on the group can explain bag balm's ingredients as listed
on my
container:
8 - hydroxy-quinoline sulfate 0.3% in a petrolatum lanolin base
Other dog owners, including myself, have been using bag balm for years.
It's

Hi Everyone...and Welcome to the Newbies!
Just got the results of Schonus' C&S back...He has staph infections
in
his paws! We've been treating him for the past month with Amoxicillin
but found out he is not sensitive to it and is now on Oxacillin. Vet
informed me that it will recur also! Now the $64,000 question is....how
the heck did he get a staph infection?????

Debby, Gerry & Buddy....
When Schonus was first diagnosed with PD Cushings...a ravenous appetite
was not one of his symptoms...he's been on Lysodren now for a few months
and his appetite has skyrocketed!!! He eats more than I do!!! Only
good part is he has not gained weight....not yet! I informed my Vet but
he was not concerned about it..

WOW!! 60 tablets for $60.00 ??? That is a great price!!!! Where do you
live?
The generic name is on the foil pack that we have. It says Anipryl and below
that in parenthesis it says selegiline HCI. I called two pharmacies who
both
quoted a more expensive price than our vet,for a change. If it would be
possible for anyone to get it from your vet it would be great!! Debby

I just faxed a note to the hospital manager at my vet's office. I asked
for the
generic name (which we've already figured out) and the supplier that they
used
to get the Anipryl. As soon as I get the info, I'll post it. We live in
the
Northern Virginia area (Wash. D.C. Metro area). They said that they had
not
known that there was a generic before but that they had not ordered 5mg
tablets
before. Thus, he seemed to think that the generic may only be available
in 5mg-
this doesn't make sense though. If somebody is producing a generic, I'm
sure
they would be producing in different strengths. Anyway, as soon as I know
more,
I'll be sure to post.
Beth
PS- any info you have to share about how long your pets took to get reach
a
therapeutic level of this drug would be appreciated. I love JoJo dearly
but I
can't wait until she stops ingesting terrific amounts of water and peeing
all
over my carpets. ;-)

On the Tibetan Terrier listserv this is a frequent topic. The breed is
very allergic because they haven't existed in the Western World for that
long. Some suggestions included pouring listerine over the feet and
filling a bathtub 1/4 full with warm water and epsom salts, letting the
dog pad around there for 5 minutes. Also, my vet has something called
wound powder that I dust on after drying the feet. Hope this helps,

My vet told me this week that Sweetie was not to have any more
vaccinations. He also said no heartworm meds. This summer I'm going to use
only herbal treatments for fleas and ticks.
In the past two days I've increased her intake of cottage cheese and
plain
yoghurt, and I've seen good results re bloat decrease.

I have read with concern the postings from Lia Brown regarding her Maggie
and the helplessness she feels at being unable to afford to provide
vetrinary care for her. I have contacted Lia and obtained her postal
address. Eileen and I have forwarded a small contribution to assist Lia
in
her efforts. I know it is an unusual procedure to post a person's personal
address, but I also know that we, as a group, are a very caring bunch of
dog
lovers. If you feel you can do anything to help Lia and Maggie, Lia's
address is:-
Lia BROWN, 677 Aylmer Street North, Upper Apartment, Peterborough,
Ontario, K9H 3X5, Canada.
I also intend to contact the manufacturers of Anipryl and acquaint
them
with Lia's dilemma. Maybe they will take Maggie on as a test case or just
return something for the profits they reap from the rest of us.
Be guided by your hearts,
Eileen and Dave ROBERTS - Terrible Ted likes the idea, too!!

Thanx for your helpful hints. I'm already soaking his feet in Domeboro
solution and then applying Bactoderm which doesn't seem to help. He had
been on Amoxicillin but was nonsensitive to it and is now on Oxacillin.
It's kinda hard to explain where it is raw...it's not actually the pad

there was blood all over the place!! Did you dilute the Listerine or

Hi,
After reading so many posts where the symptoms are ravenous appetite,
it =
makes me wonder. I'm having the opposite problem. Brandy won't eat. I
=
have to mix turkey in with her regular food, and half the time she picks
=
out the turkey and leaves the rest. She doesn't look thin to me her =
abdomen is very distended, but her weight is way down almost 8 lbs.
I'm taking her Monday for her final set of testing to determine if it
is =
Pituitary or Adrenal.
Thanks for this great support group.

Hello everyone! I have been lurking up until now. This is a great place!
=
We
have a 9yr old(next month) Bichon Frise who was just diagnosed with =
Cushing's
(pituitary). He had his first dose of Anipryl today. He is on 10mg/day,
=
weighs
15lbs, and the cost is 69.70 for 30 tabs. His diagnosis was a result of
=
blood
work in relation to another chronic problem(bladder stones). His alk =
phos. was
elevated so he then had a low dose dex. test which was positive for =
cushing's.
He has not exhibited any signs nor symptom of the disease except for =
lately I
am becoming convinced that his ravenous appetite is indeed a symptom, =
not just
his usual pigish self, as it does all of a sudden seem to be getting to
=
be a
real problem. Hindsight is 20/20. I hope, hope, hope, that the Anipryl
alleviates this. It must be so awful for him to feel so starved all the
=
time
and his constant teasing is driving me nuts. I feel so guilty eating in
=
front
of him. Does anyone else have this problem and if so has the treatment
alleviated it?Thanks. It is nice to meet all of you. Debby, Gerry, and

My Maxine, a nine year olf Lhasa Apso, has been on Lysodren for one
year. It's only been in the last few weeks that she's had a ravenous
appetite, mainly in the morning. She raises ovr to eat the cats' canned
food (butts their heads out of the way, no matter what flavor Fancy
Feast!). She's had close to normal cortisol levels for 6 months on
1/4 tablet of Lysodren 3 times a week. The craving for cat food is
only in the morning, despite the fact that her IAMS is out for her on
another floor. So far she hasn't gained weight.

Stealing cat food was one of the first symptoms of Cushings for Bo. Even
when we put their dishes way up, like more than five feet up on some
armoires, he would try to find a way to scamble up and get the dishes.
Maybe your dog's Lysodren level isn't high enough.

Hi Linda! I am very new to this list. Is licking paws also a symtom
of a
Cushingoid dog?
My male is going in on Mon. for a blood test after being on his medication
for one wk. We are just in the intro stage. He is still very bloated but
not as bad as it was a wk. ago. Appetite ravenous and thirsty always.
I wish you good luck and I know that we all wish it to each other.

Hello,
I started monitoring your group about a month ago. I've learned alot!
Here's our Cushings story:
We had a 9 year old male basset/beagle mix named Alex who was
diagnosed with Cushings. Alex was never a healthy specimen to begin
with (he was on soloxine for thyroid imbalance and was incontinent)
and this was the final straw for him. We put him on lysodren, and on
the 3rd day he stopped eating and drinking, he vomited, had diarrhea,
became extremely weak, and was leaking a rust red urine. There were
red blotches under his skin. (internal bleeding?) We had him
euthanized - he was near death and had suffered enough.
Kipper the schipperke (also around 9) was diagnosed the following week
with Cushings also. She had all the symptoms - hair loss, panting,
weakness, excessive drinking, big appetite, distended belly. We put
her on lysodren (reluctantly - I was afraid of the stuff after Alex)
and she seemed to improve a bit after about 10 days on it. On day 12,
she was drinking less and her appetite decreased, so we cut the
lysodren dose in half. Day 13 started out with Kip vomiting up her
breakfast and then refusing food and water for the rest of the
morning. She was very weak and seemed disoriented, so in we went to
the vet for a cortisone shot. We discontinued the lysodren and
substituted a daily prednisolone pill for the next 2 days. She seems
better now, her tail is wagging again and her appetite is back. We
will start on depronel (sp?) and see how that works for her.
